My host dad says my English is more fluent than Furry's :P "The hippie shoeless guy" was one of the most popular topics at the dinner table.

I've got a chocolate calendar and a home to go to tonight - if I find the right bus.

Puppy love!

When you need to get relaxed, there's no better way than having a date with a puppy. This beautiful girl is living in the family of my friend from work. She's a westie, 13 weeks old. My heart melts!

Suomalaista jouluaskartelua.

Töihini liittyen olen menossa kouluvierailulle, jossa toistakymmentä 8-10-vuotiasta saa tunnin tehopläjäyksen Suomi-tietoutta ja -aktiviteetteja. Koska lumihiutaleita askarrellaan täälläkin (vaikkei täällä lunta yleensä sadakaan), niin päätin sitten esitellä tämän askartelun ja jakaa kuvalliset ohjeet teillekin.

Olen palannut.

Kodista kotiin.

Kotiin, jossa ovella tultiin juosten vastaan.

Mummolan marraskuu. November at grandparents'.

The sun is dying. It doesn't rise every day and when it does, it's so beautiful that it makes you cry. It makes you think about the granny who loved the beautiful sunny days. And the darkness and all the shades of dead and grey make you think of the granny who was tired and ill and ready to go. I miss her so much. She is present all the time, in all the non spoken words, in every deep breath my granda takes. The November in this home is so different from the November in the other.

For the internationals I can tell that the sunset photos have been taken between 2 and 3 in the afternoon.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Someone profound is gone. As if there was no wind anymore, something that was always there, something you loved, something you didn't always notice. And still she was always there.

In the bubble.

I've travelled a lot today. From Belfast to Dublin where I had to concentrate in order to understand people speaking. From Dublin to Oslo where my assistant forgot me and I nearly missed my connection (and where I had to be ashamed of my fellow Finns). And from Oslo to Helsinki and further to Kerava.

I've left Belfast where my host mum took me to the bus station where our community's leader happened to be waiting for a bus to go to our center. Meeting him is always such a delight, he is one of the most inspirational people I've ever met.

I've travelled from sunny autumn morning with smiling faces and dog cuddles to grey and dark and depressed bubble here. In this bubble there's such a short time from the previous funeral and so much sorrow in the air that it feels difficult to breath.

And yet I was delighted of the proper bread, good cheese and fresh veggies in the supper table.

I don't want to think about tomorrow.

Heart is not a house.

Millie and Furry have been developing a facinating thought during the past few days. Home is where your heart is. A house is not a home. So... A house isn't where your heart is? Your heart isn't in the house? House is a heart? Having started my funeral adventure by getting myself delivered from door to door I can now honestly say, that my heart is in the course center in the sticks, where I can see and hear the ocean and where there's always somebody to talk to. I am homesick already now and I've only been away for 6h 45min. I forgot my cane, my Finnish SIM-card and my binoculars home. Luckily there might be a spare cane in the other home in Finland.

I left a message for this international family of mine, it had absolutely nothing in it, but the message was more or less that I will miss them and am planning to return after being away for 3% of the year. In the evening, while watching the Big Bang Theory and eating Asian take out in my host family the phone rang and one of the mid term volunteers was there, wanting to say goodbye and wish me luck and strength. This truly is a family :)

The win-win learning situation yesterday involved A wanting to draw something on the foot of B, B not really fancying the idea and the situation escalating to a somewhat hilarious wrestling match. In the end B had a smiley on his leg, A had lost her marker and both A and B had very permanently marked hands. Today A has a sore shoulder, a few funny sore muscles and a feeling, that she needs to start excercising. B apparently has just the permanent smiley on his leg.

Kissa pöydällä ja linnut katonrajassa.

jälkeen

ennen

Olen pinonnut tavaroita matkalaukun viereen, hautajaisreissu koittaa ylihuomenna.

For the internationals - the "pulloposti" button below means comments, so in case you want to scribble something for me, that's the easiest way. :)

Yhteisöelämää. Community living.

Life in a community is ups and downs. On a daily basis people enter other people's spaces without paying attention which leads into one throwing a party while the other would just like to chill and be still or other similar, somewhat akward situations. But that's ok and normal.

At times people have time to sit down to drink tea together as today before the grand all site clean up (I've practices my hoovering and mopping skills a lot!) and spontaneously playing "validation wheel" - spinned a pen on the dinner table and gave nice feedback to everyone in their turn when the pen pointed them. A true moment of tea and sympathy!

The life of volunteers is regulated by rotas. Work rotas, worship rotas, all kinds of rotas. Different people are off at the same time and during the last rota loads of people spent time together on their days off. Went to (London)Derry to party, went to Belfast to chill, visited families together. I wanted to have space or heard of the plans on a very short notice and wasn't invited. Maybe people thought that I wouldn't be interested, I don't know. On this rota I decided to spend time with the team, especially now as I'm going home for the funeral and then to London. But a lot of the others want to be spontaneous and not plan, or just stay home and do nothing, or be alone. Or they have different days off than I do.

The language is a limit, border. My social skills seem to be on holiday. I can't find a connection to the people I'd like to and I don't understand why.

At times I'm glad I have the return flight booked, staying at home with grandpa is such a tempting option now.

Hippipesupähkinöitäkin ajatellen on suotavaa käyttää lämpötilaa, jossa pesuaine liukenee pähkinöistä. Kuuvan ohjuskriisin kaltaista ilmapiiriä oli havaittavissa aamutuimaan, kun yhdeksään mennessä koneelliseni olivat jurnuttaneet kaksi tuntia eikä pyykkikone ollutkaan tavalliseen tapaan vapaana. Mitä tästä opin? Jatkossa pesen superpitkillä ohjlemilla vain yhtä koneellista kerrallaan, ehkä sillä saadaan rauha maahan.

Minun päivärytmini on erilainen. Menen nukkumaan puolen yön aikaan, nousen seitsemän-kahdeksan korvilla.

Huonekaverini Sissi on herkkäunisin koskaan tapaamani henkilö.

Despite all this, I love being here and I wouldn't change it to anything else. It's just the times when you "try your best and you don't succeed" that make me feel slightly blue.

Tuppulandia.
